Web Design is an unregulated industry and there are a lot of have-a-go heroes out there. WordPress has only made things worse.
Now they can buy a template for £20, throw your logo on it send you a bill for four figures. So how do you avoid the charlatans?
Simply ask a lot of questions. Ask them outright if that’s what they’re intending to do. Are they going to sell you a pre-built template or are they going to provide a bespoke design unique to your business?
Ask them if they’re a designer comfortable with building brands and working with existing visual identities. Ask them if they know how to write HTML, CSS and PHP code.
Of course it might not be the end of the world if not. WordPress is fantastic and there are some nice looking commercial WordPress themes on sale out there. Maybe they can find one that suits your business?
But if somebody claims to be a professional Web Designer and sells you a site made like that, it tells me they have no design skills and only minimal technical skills. So you’d better hope that template suits your requirements perfectly, because they won’t be capable of making any structural changes to it.
Which means your website will look just the same as every other website that uses the same WordPress Theme.
In which case, the self proclaimed Web Designer shouldn’t be charging you any more than the bare minimum.
But even if it’s really cheap, is that good enough for your business? Your website is a hugely important part of your brand and you should take it seriously. A cheap generic template makes you look… cheap.
If you don’t see the value of investing in a good website, will your potential customers see the value of investing in you?
When you’re looking for a Web designer, you should be appointing someone who’s the real deal, not a template jockey. An experienced professional with proven design skills who has also put in the time to learn development to a high standard.
That way, you’ll get a bespoke website from someone who is prepared to work with you until you get exactly what you want. Surely that’s better that having to make do with an off-the-shelf template? Especially if you’re paying good money for it.
